The Good. The Bad. The Future of Hiring with AI.

By Liza Palermo, Chief Experience & Marketing Officer, Staffmark Group

Artificial intelligence is transforming how we hire — and how people apply — faster than most of us can hit “APPLY.” From AI-written resumes to automated interviews, the talent journey is evolving in real time.

I recently sat down with Staffing Industry Analysts’ senior editorial director, Craig Johnson, to talk about what this shift really means. Here are a few of the key insights I shared about the opportunities and the growing pains of this new era:

1. AI Leveled the Playing Field… and Then Flooded It

Job boards opened the door to transparency. Now, generative AI has given every job seeker the tools to craft polished, professional resumes instantly. It’s a win for equity — but it also means employers are inundated with applicants, making it harder to find authentic connections in the noise.

2. Early Algorithms Made the Gap Worse

Those first screening tools prioritized keyword hits over real qualifications. Strong candidates without the “right” buzzwords were filtered out, while others advanced without the soft skills or context needed to succeed. That’s when hiring started to feel like a black hole for everyone involved.

3. Conversational AI Is Bringing Back the Human Nuance

Today’s conversational and voice-enabled agents can engage thousands of candidates at once while still gathering meaningful, contextual insights. Given the choice between radio silence and fast, intelligent interaction, most candidates choose the latter.

4. Personalization = Respect in the Age of Automation

Candidates will move fast to provide information — if the follow-up respects their time and effort. Using accurate, structured data to deliver personalized communication isn’t optional anymore. It signals care, professionalism, and humanity.

5. Technology Can Accelerate Hiring, But It Can’t Build Relationships

Automation is powerful, but it can’t replicate a personal phone call, a moment of coaching, or a handwritten note. At Staffmark Group, we protect these moments fiercely — because they’re where culture is felt and trust is built.

Final Thoughts: Our Edge Isn’t AI. It’s Us.

As AI automation becomes standard across the industry, the real competitive difference will be — you guessed it — driven by people.  Who listens better, supports more thoughtfully, and builds deeper relationships with talent and clients.

Technology can automate tasks. But connection, insight, and trust? Those will always come from people.
