National Hispanic Heritage Month at Staffmark Group:

National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed each year in the United States beginning on September 15, celebrates U.S. Latinos—their culture, history, and contributions. First established by Congress in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, it was expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988. The observance begins in mid-September to align with the independence days of several Latin American nations: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica all celebrate on September 15, followed by Mexico on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.

As we honor this history and celebrate the many cultures it represents, it’s also important to understand the language we use. You may hear Hispanic Heritage Month also referred to as Latinx Heritage Month.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are important distinctions:

  • Hispanic refers to language, describing people who speak Spanish or come from Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Latino refers to geography, encompassing people from—or descended from—Latin American countries.
  • Latinx is a gender-neutral alternative to Latino.

While “Latino/Latinx” deemphasizes ties to Spain, some argue that any single term oversimplifies the many unique cultures within the community.

Why These Distinctions Matter

Being aware of these distinctions is essential when crafting content for Hispanic Heritage Month. It ensures that your messaging is both accurate and respectful — and, most importantly, it shows genuine regard for a community whose rich diversity deserves to be honored and represented with care.

A Legacy of Belonging

At Staffmark, we are proud to support this community both within and beyond our organization. Through our H.O.L.A. Alliance (Hispanic/Latino Outreach for Leadership & Advancement), we strive to create meaningful opportunities for engagement, mentorship, and professional development for Hispanic and Latino employees across our workforce. By fostering connection and growth, we not only celebrate heritage but also empower future leaders.

We invite you to take part in Hispanic Heritage Month through learning, conversation, and celebration. This is a time not only to reflect on history but also to recognize the resilience, achievements, and voices that continue to shape and enrich our nation’s story.
